HE NEVER SHOULD HAVE grabbed her like that. Never should have kissed her. It wasn’t right. She’d married him in a panic, and as for him—he wasn’t entirely sure why he’d offered. Maybe because he didn’t want the good folk of Glory to think any worse of the Winslows than they already did. Maybe to hide the fact that his brother had disappeared—blown out of town with his little Stella dog beside him and no goodbyes. Noah didn’t know where he might have landed. Nor did he care. He just hoped Jesse stayed away.

He wished Jesse had taken the other dog with him, too. It made him shudder to hear that animal howl at night. And no one could get near him since Jesse left. Carl had tried. If Carl couldn’t get near him, no one could. His foreman had put food out, too, and told him that once in a while the food was gone in the morning. Whether it was eaten by coyotes or by Jesse’s stray, no one knew.

So far, none of his neighbors or acquaintances had brought up the subject of Jesse’s disappearance. Once he had the house moved and the trailer pulled away—which he’d do this week—they’d notice that things had changed around the Lazy SB, all right. They might think he and Jesse’d split over the American woman. His new wife. The way Carl had suggested. And they had—only it wasn’t quite the story folks would suppose.

He had the trailer to get moved. Amos Petersen was coming over to haul the house away at the end of the week.

There was roundup and spring branding to organize. He was figuring on the end of May for that, about two more weeks or so. Adam Garrick had his gather planned for the May long weekend, and Noah normally would have helped out. Now, with his new wife being pregnant, he’d begged off.

Maybe early June for the Lazy SB. There were hands to hire, and neighbors to talk it over with—they generally pitched in with each other’s roundups and brandings, regular annual events that felt more like parties, sometimes, than hard work. Cal Blake would likely show up, and his brother Jeremiah would no doubt send over a few hands from the Diamond 8. Ben Longquist was a regular at the brandings, even though he was a farmer’s son and had been at college now for a couple of years. Ben was finished with school for the summer and itching to get his hands dirty again. He was a good worker and, in fact, Noah had thought of offering him a job through until next fall. And there was Ben’s younger brother, Trevor, coming up, nearly fifteen he’d be now. He was a dam good little roper—Carl had shown him a few tricks last summer.

They’d need an experienced cook for the crew. And maybe someone to give Abby a hand in the house. She couldn’t cook for a branding crew, not with the babies coming so soon.
